Why I Am Running
Dear Friends,
Please accept this as my request to be considered for the Liberal nomination in the Provincial Riding of St. Paul’s. My family and I have been resident in St. Paul’s for several years and are committed to serving this wonderful, diverse community. It would be an honour and a pleasure for me to represent St. Paul’s in Queen’s Park.
It is important for the Member for St. Paul’s to have a governance vision driven by what the province and country will need to succeed. I have been committed to serving the public throughout my working life. Ontario faces unprecedented challenges which demand experience, insight and creativity. This is not the time for untested leadership in St. Paul’s. Forging an economic, social and environmental future for the country’s largest province must draw on an acquired body of knowledge and practical experience in the real world.
My reasons for running are briefly that:
I want to put my extensive experience, insight and leadership skills to work for the people of St. Paul`s and for the Province of Ontario - Times of economic and social crisis require experience, knowledge and wisdom to set us back on the path to prosperity. I am especially keen on the importance of education, training, creative skills development and internships to ensure that our young people find good employment and are well prepared for the demographic opportunities created as baby boomers retire over the next decade. I am committed to early learning as a first step to create opportunities for children at risk.
I would like to help make St. Paul`s a leader in social innovation - The richness and diversity of our community and the quality of our working relationships are critical to our future economy and society. Cooperation, collaboration and partnerships will be the lifeblood of success in the future. St. Paul`s is a diverse riding, culturally and economically. It has a higher than average education level. We should be able to model the Canadian dream here. Coupled with respect and civility, we must build on our diversity as a model community. Nation-building begins with community-building.
I am passionate about good, responsible government and I want to be part of a Government that has a leading edge agenda on innovation in governance within a Westminster style of government - This involves accountability, openness and long term planning beyond the short term electoral cycle, to put the public interest first. Ethical leadership based on solid values of openness, transparency, fairness, integrity are important to me. How well government works is a function of political leadership. I want to be part of this and of serving Ontarians well.
The goals are clear. Getting there is not. Inner resources will be needed to help steer towards the future and manage the way forward.
I have been inspired by great men and women who have worked hard to build a fair and just society and a prosperous economy. Perhaps I derive my commitment from my grandfather who was an agronomist with the Ontario government and saw the post war potential of the government role in agriculture to leverage economic and social development in aboriginal communities and between aboriginal and non aboriginal communities. Perhaps like many new Canadians, I saw the power of a democratic process that is inclusive and respectful, but needs diligence and commitment to liberal principles to keep it robust. I recall vividly the first time my parents, as status Indians, were allowed to vote in a federal election. I believe strongly in our democratic and institutional ideals and to continuous renewal of government and governing.
It makes sense for me to build on this and move to the next step.
It would be an honour to serve you, your family and the St. Paul’s community in Queen’s Park.
Sincerely,
Judith Moses
